In last two years young spin command attracted lots of attention which included many young names like Axar patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Yazuvendra Chahal. Today this is about Axar Patel who is another Spin master India has produced. He comes from the suburbs of the Ahmedabad, an Industrial town Nadiad in Gujarat. A town that was known to produce leaders and scholars have now produced a good promising cricketer with an extraordinary talent of spin bowling.
Axar Patel Biography and Success Story
Axar Patel was born on 20th of January 1994 in Anand district of Gujarat. He is slow left arm orthodox spinner and left arm batsman.
A late Starter
Axar Patel had no intentions to become cricketer at the early age and it was in class ninth when his friend Dhiren Kansara came to him and persuaded him to play Inter-school tournament as his school when he was told team could not be formed due to lack of players. This was a starting point of his career.
A Mechanical Engineer Aspirant
Axar was very bright student as he was topper in class X and he aspired to become mechanical engineer. But learning from Axar’s friends about Axar’s cricketing potential his father wanted Axar to take it seriously.
Misadventures of Axar
Axar’s father got him admitted in cricket academy but Axar would give impression that he is going for practice session but instead played gully cricket. Once his father discovered his misadventures he was vigilant and made sure he went for training.
Emotional Influence of his Grand-mother
When Axar’s Grandma watched cricket on Tv he used to say, I wanted to see Axar playing in this “Blue T-shirt” (Indian team Jersey) because she understood that blue t-shirt guys play for India. When Axar Patel made his debut for India, she was alive to watch him on Tv. Axar Patel was not able to attend her funeral as he was plying District level match at that time.
A Tragedy Struck in 2010
In 2010 Axar Patel was selected to play for Gujarat U-19 team but he hurt his leg during Diwali season. He got 10 stitches on his leg and he was ruled out of the entire season. He was so scared that he wanted to quit cricket as he was not able to tolerate pain, but his grandmother’s wish kept him inspired.
Axar Patel’s role model is Yuvraj Singh, that’s why you get to see a similarity in bowling action and batting style between the two.
Joined Mechanical Engineering too
Axar Patel is also a student of Mechanical engineering at harmsinh Desai University in Nadiad, Gujarat.
Debut at Domestic level
In 2012 against Madya Pradesh, Axar did his first-class debut and he got to play only one game in that season. However, in next season, he finished the season with 29 wickets and 369 runs at the average of 46.12 in seven matches.
ACC Emerging cup
India Was able to win Under-23 title in the ACC emerging in 2013 because of the performances like 7 wickets of Axar Patel which included 4 wickets in the semi-final against UAE.
Mumbai Indians Signed Axar Patel in 2013 and he was signed by Kings XI Punjab in 2014. He got Emerging player of the year award in year 2014 as he finished the season with 17 wickets.
Because of his impressive performance in IPL 2014 he was rewarded place in the Indian ODI squad for India’s tour of Bangladesh. He made his debut in the first match of the series where he too one wicket for 59 runs.
Impactful T20I Debut
Axar Patel made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2015. He took three wickets in that match for 17 runs and was declared man of the match.
World Cup Call
He was part of Indian squad for 5 match ODI series against India and he took 11 wickets in the series as a result he was selected for 15 man squad for the World Cup. He didn’t get any game to play in the World Cup and India lost to Australia in Semi-finals.
